Discussion Board Post on Values
On page 90 of the PDF of Chapter 3, Sociologists Robin Williams (1970) identified six (6) important US Values. These six are: 1. Achievement and Success 2. Activity and Work 3. Efficiency and Practicality 4. Equality 5. Democracy 6. Group Superiority Pick one of these six values and defend whether you think it is still a top priority in American Culture. You can argue it is still relevant and should be listed as a top value or you can argue that times have changed and this value is not such a top priority anymore. You must give at least TWO examples for your argument. Then pick a value not on the list that you think is important in today’s culture. Williams wrote his list over 40 years ago. State your value and then support why you feel it is an important value in today’s culture. Give at least ONE example for your support. Then respond to fellow classmates posting in a developed and thought provoking way.

Chapter 1 Discussion Post
Read the article listed above. You can find it on pages 20 and 21 of the PDF version of Chapter 1. Once you have read the article, you will need to respond to the following questions in this discussion post. 1. Do you think the benefits of the "McUniversity" outweigh the disadvantages? Why or Why Not? Be specific in your support. A well-developed answer should have at least two reasons for your opinion. 2. Then think about other industries or professions that are being affected by "McDonaldization." You can ask anyone to help with this. Give one example and explain why you chose that example. A well-developed response will be original and have a concrete example. If an industry or profession has already been discussed you will need to come up with a new example for your choice. 3. Then, as usual, respond to at least one other student's posting. Be thorough, thoughtful and use critical thinking to respond. 4. Grammar and standard formal English will be assessed. CHAPTER 4 SECTION 3 DISCUSSION POST
Proverbs and American Culture Go to the link below and look at the extensive list of American/English proverbs. http://homepage.smc.edu/reading_lab/american_english_proverbs.htm ONCE A PROVERB HAS BEEN USED BY A CLASSMATE, YOU CANNOT CHOOSE IT. THERE ARE PLENTY OF EXAMPLES FOR EVERYONE TO DISCUSS A SEPARATE PROVERB. Pick one of the proverbs from the list and then answer the following questions in your response: Do proverbs teach values? How accurately does your proverb reflect current US values? Should the proverb be updated? Suggest a new proverb to be added to this changing culture or reword your proverb to reflect the more current culture. Explain why you chose the changes to the old proverb or explain why your new proverb should be added to a more modern list? Once you have finished your post, then respond to one other response in a thoughtful way. Please respond to someone new. Chapter Four - Socialization and Technology
